DESCRIPTION

This course will help you understand the complex world of global illicit trade in goods. You will learn about the reasons behind illegal activities, how bad actors operate, and the economic and social factors that drive supply and demand for illicit goods, such as counterfeits. The course will also explore how different cultures and legal systems affect counterfeiting and piracy. By the end of the course, you will be able to evaluate the impact of illicit trade, identify related crimes, and develop strategies to reduce the risks associated with intellectual property crime.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the scope and impact of global illicit trade and the role bad actors play.
  • Recognize the motivations for bad actors ‘risk and reward structure of criminal opportunity’ for IP crime.
  • Review socio-economic conditions that may impact supply and demand of illicit trade. 
  • Understand the impact of culture on counterfeiting and piracy.
